Physical Description

Big and bald, Vargis likes to keep it simple. A leather jacket over a t-shirt and jeans are like a second skin to him. Course-grit sandpaper stubble covers his boxy jaw, regardless of when he last shaved, and it’s rare to find him without a cigar.

Personality

Life wasn’t easy on Aquilos. Especially for those like Vargis, who weren’t born into money. Competition was fierce, and the xenophobic, isolationist policies stemmed the flow of new ideas, and new opportunities.

Vargis grew up on the street, taking what he needed however he could get it. He witnessed injustices every day, and though he regularly broke laws to survive, he held himself to a strict ethical standard.

Vargis was always a bit on the heavy side, but he was no fool, and could keep with his peers in most areas. What he lacked was education and opportunity. But frankly, he didn’t care. He felt school was mostly a waste of time.

As he grew up, Vargis leveraged his size and higher-than-average pain threshold to convince people to give him what he wanted, or take it if they didn’t.

Intimidating as he was, Vargis was also fiercely loyal and very friendly… so long as you didn’t cross him.

History

As soon as he could, Vargis joined the local police force. He wanted to protect the weak and unfortunate, and punish those who would take advantage of others.

Vargis built his contacts and knew his way around the streets. He also excelled at hand-to-hand combat, but was only an average marksman. But despite his good marks and dedication, his lack of respect for authority and questioning of the current government led his superiors to transfer him off-world.

This new world was far more open and technologically advanced than Aquilos, and opened Vargis’ to new tech, and new cultures. He saw how backward Aquilos was, and how rampant corruption had become. Shortly after arriving on the new world, Vargis was approached by one of the leaders of the local mafia. It turns out that his promotion and transfer were engineered by this particular family. They offered him a position in the family. Having become completely disheartened with the established governments and law enforcement, he decided to take the offer and work outside the law that he originally thought was there to protect the people, but after seeing it from the inside, now believed it was only there to protect those in power.

Vargis worked several jobs, and even turned down an offer from a rival family who wanted him to assassinate his boss. Usually he provided muscle and security, but one particular job he was invited into the inner circle. It was outside of his comfort zone, but he didn’t let them down. Unfortunately the backlash of this job led to his eventual arrest.

After serving his time, he felt it might be better to steer clear of either side of the law and enlist in the military. His only real skills were fighting anyway.

He did well in the Army, making a quick name for himself and earning the respect of his peers. He was even brought in on a special assignment early on. He was feeling good about himself, and was in the best shape of his life. But the physical exertion took it’s toll on his aging body. Arthritis hit hard, and his knees and hips ached constantly. His hands shook, and his punches lacked the force they used to have. He could still take a punch, and could last as long, or longer, than the younger guys when they ran drills. Even though sometimes it was sheer willpower that kept him going.

Vargis decided that the physical conditioning of the army was getting to be too much for him. The command structure also irked him the higher he advanced. So he thought it was time for an early retirement. He figured he’d strike out on his own and see what was out there. Having lived on an isolated planet for his entire childhood, it was time to explore. He had only skimmed the tip of the iceberg, and none of his careers were taking him far enough, or giving him the freedom his soul needed.

Vargis is currently looking for small jobs as a “security consultant”. He primarily propositions starship captains, but is just as willing to work on-world – as long as the money is right (and his boss isn’t a prick).
